Spring-cleaning isn’t just for springtime anymore

by Cari Pilon

Did summer go by as fast for you as it did for me? Before you know it the leaves will be changing, the wind will get colder and we will all be spending more and more time indoors. If you are like me, we spent so much time taking care of the outside this summer, that the inside is a little neglected. Now is the time to take a good look around and take note of things you aren't happy with. Did you pick up some new artwork on your vacation? Did you buy any new knick-knacks? My son broke a lamp (well, two actually) and we have to replace those. Maybe you are tired of the old look and are due for a makeover. It can get overwhelming.

Here are a few tips that can make it all a little easier:

De-clutter- if you don't do it now it will only get worse. For papers, magazines, drawings etc. use the one-month rule of thumb, if you haven't touched it in the past month either file it away or throw it away.

Organize- A place for everything and everything in it's place. Clear a space for shoes, boots, mittens, coats etc. Make sure everyone knows where they go and how to put them away. Label areas so items can be put away properly.

Assess- Look over your home. Do you have items that are faded, stained, or broken? Assess how you can remedy these items, or maybe they just need to be discarded. Cover faded or stained furniture with a slipcover. Replace a torn comforter with a duvet. Get new mechanisms from a craft store to repair a broken clock.

Redesign- Now that the clutter is gone, you are organized and you have assessed those items that you want to keep in your life, give the room a fresh, new look with a redesign.

In one day, your furnishings, artwork and accessories can be repositioned to create a beautiful new space.

Soon you will discover the answer to “What Makes Your Home Beautiful?”
